My family has owned 93 acres in Butler, OH since the early 1800's, and plan to retain it in perpetuity. Having recently visited and locating most property corners (map here), I noted some management needs and would like to discuss with a professional. We are interested in any information on DNR programs regarding forest management, invasive species, wetland conservation and/or habitat considerations.
The parcels are wooded and rolling hills intersected by a stream and Freed Rd. There are several distinct stands and disturbed areas apparent, although the sizes and extent is unmapped. Several logging events have occurred over the past 20(?) years with varying levels of stewardship were applied.
The items of interest / concern, to me, and based upon my recent visit include:
-Mapping & delineating the existing stands and wetlands;
-Initiation of forest management practices for watershed & wildlife preservation;
-Timber-stand evaluation & improvement;
-Invasive species reduction.
Again, we intend to implement a forestry management plan to promote timber stand improvement, wildlife habitat, wetland and watershed conservation. Any information, assistance, recommendations the you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.

Yes, I remember meeting Cleve out at the property back in the late 1999 or early 2000’s. I have not been out there since the early 2000’s, so if you have done some timber harvesting or had damage from wind/ice storm, and etc. I would not know about it. So, at some time it would probably be a good idea to go over the property again and update the current forest management plan.

I will have to pull the plan, but yes there should be a plan on file from the early 2000’s. I will let you know what I find when I get a chance to pull the file.

Feb 1, 2017:
Having visited, researched and contemplated the Butler93 I would like to
consider some changes in its management and operation:
-the land east of Freed Rd needs time to regenerate, though a directed
thinning wouldnt hurt;
-west of Freed Rd is ready for harvest and vine management;
-I would like a copy of the registered management plan for my records;
-The gate should be chained and locked, signage would be good too
-Encroachment of a trailer/party area can be seen on aerial photography.
Boldly, I suggest:
-The authorized hunter has a far-too-permanent structure, an abandoned
shanty, blind and deer baiter (not illegal in OH);
-his exit or lease would catalyze improved management
-Hunting land leases are in high demand on Craigslist (Mansfield / Columbus
/ Cleveland), this could produce income of 10 to 20$ per acre annually
-we set the duration and terms (bow hunting -v- rifle,
vacant for summer, insurance);
-this would offset taxes and signage costs.
I would like to look at the plan, eject the hunter and his crap, write to
the probable encroachers, add signage, then lease for next fall.
Whatchathink?
